This completely free education course covers all aspects of your SUP safety equipment; what you should be using and why, broken down into bite-sized chunks, drilling deep into the complexities and issues to give you the full story and assist you in making the best decisions on what gear will be best for you.
Stand up paddleboarding may seem like a very safe sport , yet every year hundreds of paddleboarders end up getting into trouble, getting rescued – and tragically, sometimes the story does not end well. It almost always comes down to education – those paddlers getting into trouble were missing some critical knowledge. Hence this course. It will give you the knowledge that may well end up saving your life!
The 2.5 hour course is broken down into bite-sized chunks or lessons so you can work through it at your leisure – or just pick out the bits you’re interested in. As you’ll see from the list of topics below, there’s a whole lot of information here! The course goes into great detail, with practical examples, video and pix to make it relevant to stand up paddleboarding and the actual information you need to know, not just in order to be safe but also to get the most of your paddleboarding.

Note: This course was produced in 2019, and in the years since then some opinions on safety equipment have changed. We have not yet had the opportunity to remake the relevant videos, so updates have been added as text where appropriate.
Also, we freely acknowledge that the videos and graphics in the lesson are not always of the highest quality – this course has been produced entirely by volunteers, so the focus has always been on quality and usefulness of information in the little spare time we have. Our aim is of course to land a major sponsor who will fly us all to Hawaii with a professional film crew and team of models for a couple of months so we can reshoot all the vids under the direction of Denis Villeneuve with a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Until then though, we hope you’ll put up with the next best thing and take it in the spirit that it is intended.
