This online learning package is for the would-be instructor looking to offer basic how-to SUP beginner lessons or an entry-level SUP experience in a safe, non-challenging environment. The course covers what you need to know in order to operate on a commercial basis and/or with school groups, youth groups, ‘Education Outside of the Classroom’ programmes etc.
The compliance and paperwork aspects of the course are based on the New Zealand legal framework, but should be largely applicable to work anywhere in the world.
The lessons in this online learning package cover the theory, safety understanding, knowledge and skills required to operate safe and productive sessions. It also gives additional information about understanding the environment, equipment design, what tools you need to teach SUP and much more. It will take around 11 hours to complete.
You are welcome to rewatch the lessons as many times as you like, and you will continue to have access to the material for 6 months after completion, so it remains a valuable information archive.
This training package does not contain any external assessment. It is entirely up to you what you get out of it. If you would like to get some assessment and advice on how to improve and refine your teaching skills, once you have completed the course you may apply for a practical assessment , where you will get a full critique of your performance and advice (if required) on what needs to be worked on or adjusted. There is an additional fee for the assessment (cost depends on location), which normally takes around 5-6 hours and can be booked when the candidate feels ready to take it. However, these can be quite complex to set up, and expensive if there is any significant travelling involved. For this reason, if you do want to get some assessment and feedback on your progress, we recommend the all-online version of the course, where the assessment is done remotely, by video. As all watersports and activity instructors should be first-aid qualified as part of the Safety Management system they will be operating under, so we would strongly recommend getting a First Aid qualification, of at least NZQA 6401, 6402 level.
VALIDATION
The training package is based on best practice and is in line with other paddleboard instruction qualifications worldwide. It does not offer a formal certification so it does not have a specific validity period but we would strongly recommend renewing the course every few years, to keep your skill levels current. There is a renewal course available which can be done online here.
A course completion certificate is issued upon successful completion of the final test.
